When A Fire Starts to Burn

so much depends
upon

the flickering
embers,

a deck of
cards,

and a warm cup of
karak

Baggage

packing
a suitcase
has always been
easier;
I have trained
myself
in the discipline
of traveling
light

unpacking
a suitcase
has always been
easier;
never as
daunting
as the unraveling of
the heart.

I must have
packed and unpacked
my bags
a hundred times over;
yet each distance to travel,
the weight
of displacement,
and all that exists
in the space in between
is anything but
easy.

because nobody
teaches you how
to carry real baggage –
yet here I am
learning
to carry love

Heal These Bones

heal
these bones

ribs
cracked in places –
when they expand
to make room
for people who
don’t belong

spine
curved unnaturally –
from all that bending over
backwards
instead of saying
no

arms
torn apart –
from all the times
they had to carry
far too much weight
than they knew
they could

hands
mangled –
from holding on
too long
to all the things that
pulled away,
when they should have
just let go

legs
brittle –
worn from years of overuse,
crossing countless miles
to bridge the chasms
that kept others
apart

knees
banged up –
for taking all
the impact
from all the misguided
free falling,
calling them
leaps of faith

skull
fractured –
for cushioning the blow
of all the wrong decisions
and mistakes made
over and over
until the lessons
are learned

bruised and bloody,
heal
these broken
bones
